Hawaii Battery Bonus
$850 per battery + ongoing grid services revenue
Hawaii Battery Bonus is the Hawaiian Electric (HECO) program that pays residential battery owners for grid services. Customers receive an upfront $850 bonus per battery plus ongoing grid services revenue based on capacity dispatched during peak demand. Hawaii's grid is unique — small, isolated, with the highest residential electricity rates in the US ($0.40+/kWh on some islands). Battery storage paired with rooftop solar is essentially mandatory for cost-effective electrification, and Battery Bonus reflects the high grid value of distributed storage. Hawaii also operates the Customer Self-Supply (CSS) tariff successor to net metering, which limits export and increases the value of self-consumption (and therefore battery storage).
