Mass Save ConnectedSolutions Battery Storage

~$50/kW summer peak event payment + multi-year contract

Mass Save ConnectedSolutions is the Massachusetts utility-administered battery storage demand-response program. Battery owners enroll their batteries to discharge during summer peak demand events (typically 30–60 events per summer) and receive performance payments based on how much capacity they provide. Eversource and National Grid pay approximately $50 per kW of summer peak demand reduction; National Grid also pays a smaller winter rate. A typical Tesla Powerwall 3 (5 kW continuous) participating in 50 events per year nets $200–$500 annually in ConnectedSolutions revenue. The program is among the most homeowner-friendly grid services programs in the US.

Eligibility

Who qualifies?

Massachusetts residential customers of Eversource or National Grid with grid-connected battery storage 5 kWh or larger.

Equipment requirements?

Battery must be ConnectedSolutions-approved (Tesla Powerwall, Sonnen, Generac PWRcell, Enphase IQ Battery, FranklinWH).

Enrollment commitment?

5-year enrollment minimum to ensure utility can rely on the capacity for grid planning.

How to apply for Mass Save ConnectedSolutions

  1. Confirm battery is ConnectedSolutions-approved

Most major residential batteries qualify. Confirm at masssave.com.

  2. Enroll via app or installer

Tesla Powerwall enrollment via Tesla app. Other batteries via installer or Mass Save portal.

  3. Battery dispatches automatically during events

Utility dispatches battery during peak demand. Battery state-of-charge typically drops to 20% during events, recharges overnight.

  4. Monthly performance payment

Payment based on actual capacity provided × $/kW rate. Issued via utility bill credit or direct deposit.

Stacking with other programs

ConnectedSolutions stacks with federal 25D (30% on battery cost), Mass Save Battery Storage Adder (when offered), and any solar PV credits. Performance payments are taxable income but do not reduce federal credit basis.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Powerwall 3 earn annually? +
Powerwall 3 contributes 5 kW continuous. ConnectedSolutions summer events ~$50/kW × 5 kW × 50 events ≈ $200–$500/year. Higher in National Grid territory due to winter rate.
Does ConnectedSolutions affect my battery for outages? +
During non-event hours, battery operates normally for self-consumption and backup. Events are 2–4 hours typical and only affect summer peak (typically 4–8pm).
Can I leave the program? +
5-year minimum commitment. Early exit may forfeit some payments but is allowed for documented hardship.
Does ConnectedSolutions stack with federal 25D? +
Yes. ConnectedSolutions is performance payment (revenue), not rebate — does not reduce federal 25D basis. The federal credit applies normally to battery cost.
